Nicaragua, 30 June 2010: New law bans Tobacco advertising on mass media

A new law passed by the National Assembly will ban tobacco advertising from TV, radio, newspapers and billboards. The law, which will come into effect in six months, will also force manufacturers to use 60% of the packets to inform users of the harmful consequences of tobacco.

The only media that tobacco advertising will be allowed to use are adult magazines and films. Tobacco advertising can also be displayed inside places where the product is sold. Direct ‘one-on-one’ marketing can also be employed with over 18’s.

Vice-president of the Social Health and Safety Commission that was instrumental in the drafting of the law, Iris Montenegro, explained that the law would “limit the promotion and eventually the consumption of tobacco”.

The law follows the WHO FCTC signed by Nicaragua in 2008 and correlates with the country’s 1997 Law of the Protection of the Human Rights of Non-Smokers.
